Randomness mingled with pictures

Ben told me a few days ago when he woke up with a stuffy nose that "Mommy, my nose isn't working--its broken"
He woke me up to tell me this and I start laughing in his face. He then says "Mommy your air is stinky"

One of my sons had to give a spiritual thought for a class and says he volunteered when noone else would and I said that is great so what are you going to do? He then says-- "So umm what exactly is a spiritual thought?"

Colin watched Kristen and Ben downstairs while I took a shower before he went to school. It was about 10-15 minutes. He says so Mom are you going to give me $5 dollars for babysitting. I said no it was only for 15 minutes at the most and I'm pretty sure you were sitting in the exact same spot watching Arthur as when I went upstairs. He said-Oh OK well whatever you want to pay me is fine.

Kristen's new thing she says alot is It's not my fault. She really doesn't really always use it correctly. For instance, she was trying to get a drink and she spilled the juice all over the floor. She looks up at me and says--It's not my fault. I said Well it was your fault but it was an accident. She said Well OK but just don't me mad at me.

It's the thought that counts...right?

I had this plan. It was going to be clever and funny and tasty. Weeks before Kevin's birthday I ordered these Star Wars pancake molds. I even got the Pancake Pen to ensure optimum results. I hid them for a week so he never knew I had them. The morning of his birthday came and I let him sleep in and began to create a buttermilk Yoda , Darth Vader, and Storm Trooper. I pour the mix in the pen which is a way messier process than I imagined. I then start pouring in the batter and so far so good. Well except they seem so thick. I then go to lift it up so I can flip the pancake as it stated. Well it was stuck and I couldn't get it out. I try all three of these things and after a bit of a battle I end up with 1/2 a Yoda face, a mouthpiece for Darth Vader, and a mutilated storm trooper that are all about 2 inches thick! I no longer have any batter--which I mixed enough for 12-14 pancakes! How hard can this be!! Really! It's pancakes !!

About this time here comes Kevin who sees the bomb that went off in the kitchen that was perfectly clean just hours before. He sees the 3 mutilated abnormally giant pancakes and just quietly gets a bowl of cereal and eats his breakfast. Happy Birthday--it really was going to be fabulous you'll just have to imagine it until I go back into battle.

October...So far

October historically is my least favorite month. Mostly because it is most assuredly the month I find myself a single parent. It starts out with the Firehouse open house which is where these first few pictures are from. It is fun but it is a lot of work for the firemen. October is Fire Prevention month which really I don't have anything against that except it means the Fire Dept. needs to visit every school, preschool, daycare in the whole district this month. That is a lot of classes and extra time and shifts. Also it is when the park starts their halloween nights thing which is almost every night and yep that means a lot of shifts that need to be covered. On the upside this year hasn't been so bad for whatever reason--mostly I think Kevin saying no more often and rearranging other things so October has redeemed itself so far.
Here are pictures from the month so far.
This is Kevin's boat he got to show off at the open house. He worked really hard to get the grant money and go through this long process so the Fire Dept would have their own rescue boat.

We also went to Halloween Nights one evening.
Ryan had his first band concert. It was really fun to see him play the saxophone. He has come really far in 6 weeks!!

We went to a trunk or treat activity and got a chance to wear their Halloween costumes.

Mom this picture it for you. Thanks for the costume she looks very regal!
We also went to a lot of soccer games which I can't find the pictures from. I will have to post those later. Luke had a great season on the freshman team and went from the bench to a starter in a matter of one game. He was the top scorer on the team--which he kept track of very carefully all season. So that is are month so far.

The Parenting Workout

I literally have had to be in some kind of conflict all day long. I hate confrontation, I hate conflict. I am a peacemaker--why won't anyone let me make some peace dang it!! I was feeling pretty sorry for myself on the hand I got dealt for a little bit and I thought of how a friend mentioned that she knows that through blessings she has been given her kids for a specific reason. It then occurred to me as I finally sat down at 10pm after many struggles and battles from various children that I am learning from this and this is what I need to stretch me and make me grow. If I had a house full of peaceful submissive people than I would never really have to step outside my comfort zone.

It comes natural for me to show affection to my kids but it doesn't come natural for me to set those firm boundaries and stick to it despite the storm that it creates. It comes natural for me to follow but not to lead. It comes natural for me to be completely passive and indecisive and not confident and consistent. Yet everyday I am forced to do all those things that I hate or live in utter chaos. I really believe my kids were sent to me to make me strong--they are some hardcore personal trainers that have me on a very regimented daily workout schedule. Unfortunetly they aren't the workouts that help me fit in my old pants :)

BEN.......The New Kristen

I'm not quite sure if I should be flattered Heavenly Father thinks I have the capacity to deal with these last couple of uniquely messy adventurous children or if I really screwed up along the way and have to learn some major lessons.

I was just thinking not too long ago about how Kristen actually seems to be calming down and things are so much better with her. I guess I relaxed just a little too much and Ben felt the tremor in the force so he felt it his duty to step up to live on with her legacy of destruction and mayhem.

This month he:

Took off all his clothes and when I went to get him new ones he escaped out the back door and after frantic searching I find him streaking across my neighbors yard 2 doors down. I quickly get him hoping no one witnessed that but later find out he was talking to the teenage girl that lives there and she asked him where his clothes were and he says "I don't know". Fantastic!

He sprayed Windex on all the cushions on my couch

He snuck the cooking spray downstairs and sprayed it all over the floor

He went swimming in the little pool on our deck and again takes his clothes off and is floating for awhile--over and over I put them back on and then find his shorts off. I sun screened him well but later I see these bright pink cheeks race pass me. That's why you should leave your shorts on!!!

He sprayed a whole bottle of sunscreen on each of the cushions on my couch---just about where a head would be so it looks like we all have some greasy heads. It won't come out--Nice.

He dumped a whole bottle of Men's body wash in Ryan's room on the carpet. This is a repeat performance in a different venue. The first was Luke's Axe body wash all over the carpet in my room. Ryan and Colin didn't want to sleep in their room because they said it smelled so strong it was giving them a headache.

He sprayed cooking spray on my carpet upstairs. I even had it hid in the pantry and he pulled a stool over and found it.

I will leave out the several times of cleaning other things off the carpet that smell way worse than some body wash.

So I have been lax in keeping up with my blog and other things because I'm afraid what is going on if I sit down for one minute. I am sick of scrubbing. Being vigilant is exhausting. I'm one step away from a crazy paranoid lady that mumbles too herself with a rag in one hand and cleaner in the other. So you won't see me thinking or relaxing anytime soon--that's just too dangerous.

PICTURES!!!

I finally got the pictures to upload from my camera and then I dropped it and cracked the lens so there may be another drought of pictures after these. This is some of the stuff we have been up to:
Happy St. Patrick's Day!!

Luke turned 14!! Wow that makes me feel old. He had is traditional plain angel food cake.
Kristen turned 4 and got a new bike! She loves it but doesn't know how to stop--the whole concept of pedaling backwards is just beyond her. So she just runs into the grass to slow down. Sometimes that doesn't work so well.
Easter was great. We had my family here for spring break and we had a fun Easter egg hunt. Then later we had another one with Kevin's family.

Ryan had his first piano recital. He got to play a song from Beauty and the Beast and from Star Wars so he thought that was very cool. He did a great job!

Axe-the gift that keeps giving and giving

If you don't know what Axe is than you probably don't have the privilege (that is my sarcastic font) to spend a lot of time with any teenage boys. This product is actually brilliantly marketed because most teenage boys think they must have this and that any other brand deodorant is just substandard in comparison. It used to just come as a deodorant and then to body spray but now it's out of control. They have hair gel, shampoo, and body wash in lots of different scents(with stupid names I might add like Clix, and Phoenix). I know it seems odd I care but the problem lies here. He has gotten several of these products for Christmas from various people and they are all different scents. Different strong scents. Different strong scents that do not compliment each other. Does that seem to bother him. No--the more smell the better. So I get to have my sinuses assaulted every morning with a fog of well, I'm not even sure what it is because its a mix of a musky ocean breeze mingled with some fresh Phoenix(whatever that is) and then a hint of teenage angst(that's their secret ingredient in every scent).

So this is a cautionary tale. Since teenagers don't believe in the concept of less is more--unless you are referring to work or lectures-- coordinate the shampoo and the body wash and deodorant to just one scent! Your nose will thank me I'm sure.
